Texas Holdem..a game of kings they say. New or old to the game and whether you have played on 1 poker room or 100, one thing you will by now know. If you are going to play poker Texas Holdem is the game to play. Favored by the WSOP and WPT, Texas Holdem has grown from strength to strength. The wonder that is online poker provides a unique and easy way to find out information as to the rules and game structure of what has become the biggest game worldwide.

Texas Holdem is a community card game. If you watch any poker online you will know this saying well from the likes of Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten. This means that the game has cards that each of the players use or share. The concept of holdem is to make the best five card poker hand and take down the pot. Each player at the table is dealt 2 hole cards. These are cards that are dealt face down and so seen by the player only. Once these 2 cards have been dealt to all players, players must make a decision as to whether to stay in the hand of fold, based on the strength of their 2 hole cards. Those that choose to fold their cards, throw their cards away and take no further part in the hand. For those that stay in the hand, there is a round of betting. To stay in the hand, players must match the bet that is made by previous players, betting starting left of the dealer button and working clockwise. Remember that all this takes part only after the holdem cards have been dealt. Once betting is complete, the flop is dealt.

Texas Holdem is a community card game and the first community cards are now dealt. These are three cards dealt face up on in the center of the table. Players now have 2 cards in their hand and 3 cards on the board. Already, players will have an idea as to whether the hand holds any prospects. There is another round of betting and players again must choose whether to match bets (call), fold their cards or raise the pot, meaning that other players would have to match your bet to stay in the pot. As the pot builds players base their decisions on 2 factors. Firstly, how much money is in the pot matched against how much they are being asked to pot in the pot to stay in the hand. Secondly they will work out how many outs they have. Outs is the term given to how may cards in the deck they have that would give them a winning hand with more outs being a good thing. To cut a long story shared, lets give a brief example. You face an $80 pot on the turn and your opponent bets $20. This bet is a quarter of the pot size so you could say 4-1. Now 56 cards in the deck and you hold 7H-8H-9H and the board reads 2H-3C-KS. Now you have a lot of outs. Any 10 will give you the straight as will any 6. that's 8 outs already. Now there are 13 cards to a suit and between your 1 heart and your opponents 3, there are 9 hearts left in the deck (as a maximum). This gives you another 9 outs. So you have 14 outs (cards left in the deck) which means you have roughly a 3.7-1 chance of hitting one of your cards as as the pot odds are 4-1, you should make the call as are getting value for money.

So after the flop comes the turn. This is the fourth community card that is placed in the center of the table. Once this card is dealt there is another round of betting and once again, players make their decision as to whether they stay in the hand. After the turn comes the river which is the fifth and final community card. Now you will know whether you have hit your hand or not and based on the betting will have to judge whether or not to call, bet or fold. There is a final round of betting and then showdown. Betting can get quite intense, especially in no-limit games so it is a good idea to stay in the pot if you have a premium hand. At showdown, players turn over their hole cards and the best 5 card poker hand takes down the pot.

Texas Holdem is a game of skill. There is luck to the game, yes. After all you don't know what cards you are going to get so that part is luck. What you do with the cards will be the determining factor as to whether you make or break your stack.
