How to play Poker does not come with a simple set of instructions (you will be sad to hear) so if you are new to the game, there is a bit to learn and anyway, i would be doing well to fit what you need to know onto one page! Poker-page.org is geared towards helping you gain the skills to play successfully, winning poker. If you are just at the start of your poker adventure, there is much to learn before you can expect to be winning poker games. Firstly there are many different poker games to choose from all with different poker rules (also see poker rules variants). It is not always easy to know which game you will like the most. If you have watched poker on TV, you will likely have watched Texas Holdem, as this is the most widely and popular game. That doesn't however mean it is the game for you. I would suggest going online and watching different games to see which one is more appealing. Remember there are practice tables available where you can play for play money until such time as you are ready to play for real money. All you need to do is sign up with any online card room and you will have thousands of tables to open and watch. What's more, it is worth mentioning that you are not obligated to deposit any money (ever).
Learning to play poker should also always start with some background reading. Unfortunately there is no quick method to learning poker. There are no simple instructions on how to play and as you start to develop you will see that poker is actually quite a complex game with many different strategies, betting structures and facets to the game. Don't let this put you off. If you took up tennis, you wouldn't expect to just walk on the court and play like a pro.
From my experience the key really is not to rush your development. Anyone can buy into the biggest games before they are ready but one thing is for sure, if you are not ready, you will only have reduced your bankroll. I guess one key question that any new player to the game might ask, is how long does it take to get good at the game? After all poker is all about making money, nothing else. It wouldn't be the first time i had heard the words, "I don't play if for the money, i play it for fun". As comical as i think those words are, i guess i should make my point anyway. Playing poker isn't like ordering a carry out where you pay the money simply for the enjoyment. Personally i play to win and when i am at the table, my stack is everything. I will do whatever i can to maximize my return and minimize my investment. On your quest this needs to be your goal.
So in answer to the question (how long), it never ends, just like the best tennis player in the world still learns day in day out. When you start out it is a good idea to stick to limit games as no-limit can be quicker and do require more experience if you are to come out on top. The beauty of anything that we do in life is that as we go through life and experience different experiences, we learn and poker is no different. Anyway, to get you started, here are some guides to put you on the right track.
